Transient Orcas off Beechey Head

July 9, 2011

With reports of transient orcas off the waterfront earlier in the morning, we headed south into Juan de Fuca Strait in search of the distinctive black dorsal fins of orcas as they made their way west. After an extensive search, Captain Brad spotted them south of Beechey Head, off of the southern tip of Vancouver Island. We arrived to notice a group of about 5 transient orcas, including T10 and T10B travelling quickly. This was the same group of orcas we encountered yesterday afternoon afternoon. Undoubtedly, their visit was not enjoyed by the many local harbour seals and porpoise. After the orca encounter, we travelled to Race Rocks. Always a highlight of any tour out west, we spotted harbour seals, a California sea lion and even a mature bald eagle. I would encourage all of our guests to learn more about Race Rocks and its inhabitants by visiting their website, www.racerocks.com. There is lots of archived video, detailing the wonderful underwater life and the rich history of the area. Our visit to the Race Rocks Lighthouse was a great way to conclude another fantastic tour.
