Very Calm Seas

Very Calm Seas

Today we had beautiful sunny conditions as we headed east out of the harbour in very calm seas. We sailed towards Hein and Salmon Bank, popular upwelling zones for many birds, whales and porpoises, with Mount Baker lit up on the horizon. As we continued along we reached the south end of San Juan Island, where a large male Steller’s Sea Lion greeted us from his perch on the rocks. Steller’s Sea Lions are golden brown in colour, with very thick necks, and faces often being described as resembling bears. Male Steller’s Sea Lions can reach a weight of 2,500 lb and an average of 3 meters long. After allowing a few minutes of picture taking, he jumped into the water and swam away. Soon after we passed Cattle Point on the southern tip of San Juan and headed back towards home. On our way back we made a stop at Trial Island which holds the only manned lighthouse on the Canadian Pacific, built in 1906. Here we found a group of Harbour Seals lounging in the sun and floating in the water around the rocky shores. On our way back to the harbour, we traveled along the Victoria shoreline taking in the vibrant sun.
