Frequently Asked Questions About Whale Watching

Do you offer a guarantee?

We can not guarantee to see whales on every trip as the whales are wild animals with large home ranges. We do however have a whale policy where we offer guests who did not see whales on their trip to come out again with us complimentary on a stand by basis. This offer can be redeemed any time in the future whether that is within the next few days or many years from now. This policy is effective once all three resident orca pods have returned to the area, which is typically some time in June.

How do killer whales sleep?

Because they live underwater, killer whales must be voluntary breathers. Unlike humans, their breathing is not automatic, so in order to breathe while sleeping they have to be conscious. To accomplish this, killer whales let one half of their brain sleep at a time. That way, they are able to rest while remaining aware of their surroundings.

Why are killer whales black and white?

Their distinctive colouration is known as “disruptive colouration,” a pattern then contradicts their body shape and obscures their outline. Plus, their dorsal (top) surface is darker than the ventral (underneath), which makes them harder to see. Because of these physical attributes, other animals may not recognize them as a predator.
